BAY AREA NEWS (We begin with our news that was omitted from the last newsletter): The Bay Area Chapter had a great Christmas gathering with fifty members and supporters at H’s Lordship Restaurant in Berkeley, California. We sang Christmas Carols, had Poetry Reading, and prizes for a lucky few. But most of all had FUN. OUT AND ABOUT C urtis and Flora Watson enjoyed a stop in the Big Apple on their way to a ten day cruise. While in New York, they got a chance to go to Swing 46 Supper club, and see the performance of John Dokes III. They enjoyed both events. John and Sylvia Dokes also got a chance to see their son perform on Catalina Island at a Swing Dance Festival in November. We may have a future Olympian in our midst. Nikolas Jackson won first place in tumbling and Trampoline in San Rafael and San Jose, California. He is the grandson of Alella Gipson, and the great grandson of Omezelle Gipson. We are wishing him the best. Mr. Carl Dupins has been a high roller at Country Club Lanes in the Sacramento, California area. His bowling skills have put him at the top of a few categories. Go Carl. The daughter of Billy & Eleanor LaMoyne Foxworth will graduate on May 12, 2012 from Holy Names University. Kimberly Foxworth Ertem will receive her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Fundraisers O ur Second Arkansas Ball Dinner/Dance was a great success. Our February Casino Bus Trip had a few lucky winners, and was a big success for our Scholarship Committee. There were lots of winners, and a $3,000 winner, who will remain anonymous. Sick and Shut-in W e are keeping our sick members in our prayers. Thula Wamble, Venita Graggs, and Patience Scales. We have truly been sadden by the loss of our Alumni members, Ella Manning Brown, and Maryette Lee. Arnell Dennison also lost her husband John Dennison. Our prayers go out to all of their families. 2013 Reunion W e are making plans for the reunion, and we still need your help to make sure your address and e-mail address are on file. Please forward your address or e-mail address to magicdokes@aol.com . If you received a postcard or email from us, then we have you on file. We want to insure that we have all postal addresses for our mailing near the end of the year. We are asking for photographs from past reunion participants to be included in a display during the 2013 Reunion in Las Vegas. This will be the Second Reunion for Dunbar/Horace Mann, and the Fortieth Reunion of the Alumni Association and we would like to showcase some of the past reunions. The first Reunion was in Detroit in 1973. See you in Las Vegas, Nevada July 10, 2013. Fall 2012 T he Bay Area Chapter awarded two (2) one thousand dollar scholarships to students this year. We will follow them for four years giving each one thousand dollars per year. One of the recipients was Leo Theus III, the grandson of our member James Barnes. Athletes T he grandsons of Merril and Percy Jackson were very active this summer. Joshua was a standout on his team, and his brothers Lakeal and Judah, were on the Championship Team that won the California District Five nine to ten year old Category. I guess they are chips off the old block with great genes. Our congratulations also go out for seven year old Nikolas Jackson. He is the grandson of our members Alella Gipson and the great- grandson of Omezelle Gipson. Nickolas won the USA National Tumbling Championship in Long Beach, California during July, 2012. Perhaps we have future Hall of Fame ballplayers, or Olympians. We will continue to watch their progress. Sick and Shut –in. W e have members who still need our prayers. Venita Graggs, Thula Wamble and Patience Scales. We hope for improvement in their health. Our prayers go out to the family of Dave Brown who passed away recently. Dave was a very active member of our chapter for many years until health problems set in. He will be missed with his warm personality, and respect for all. His services were held Friday, October 5, 2012.
